Cococurious: Maxwell at Radio City Music Hall
This is the listing I wrote, which for whatever reason didn't run.
Maxwell introduced a new vocabulary with his nineties soul excursions: 1996’s Urban Hang Suite, the inaugural and most impressive and “Luxury: Cococure,” from his sophomore album Embrya, the most representative of his whimsical iteration of Black intimacy unbound and masculinity unwound. The man and his “mellowsmoothe”—to whom it may be slipped is of elaborate fantasy to fans still seizing at his rendition of Al Green’s “Simply Beautiful” at this year’s BET Awards—disarmed before disappearing. This resurgent performance promises to impress and preview some of the music his label’s been sitting on and supposedly poised to release.
I'll post a full review at VIBE by the end of the day but in the meantine, check my flickr slideshow below.
