Never in my life have I witnessed that quintessential ghetto scene (and a particular fav of nineties hip hop video directors) of a brother doing pull-ups on a cross light but whatdayaknow today walking down Malcolm X boulevard from an afternoon at the Schomburg and I saw a young brother, hood but immaculately put together, doing street calisthenics with a Newport in hand.
PS-Why aren't there any black people on The Office (the fat black guy in the background doesn't count) I was looking hard for the Indian woman who was in the last episode tonight but she was M.I.A. Is the whitewash part of the joke? The writers and cast directors funny commentary on color free cubicles in the untelevised world?
> Why aren't there any black people on The Office (the fat black guy in the background doesn't count)?
RépondreSupprimerWell that would make it like 99% of the other sitcoms on TV but why would you say fat black guy doesn't count? Granted he's not a main character, but he's not really just in the background either. He's been key to some plot lines so far but to try and answer you question I think there's 2 answers: 1. they just mimiced the UK show casting or more likely 2. these characters are supposed to these vanilla and ignorant-and-unexposed to-the-minority-experience types (hence the absurd "diversity day" episode last week). I mean the show is set in Scranton PA so I'm not even sure how many minorities live out there anyway?
Actually, quite a few black live in Scranton, PA but they probably aren't going to be in the office jobs unforunately. Regardless, this interpretation sucks, compared to the original. I've rarely laughed as much as I do watching UK's The Office.
RépondreSupprimerI' don't mind as much that there are so few on the UK version. It makes sense in the context of the show. Doesn't bother me at all. The NBC show is just bad.
Haven't seen this NBC version but the Ricky Gervais and crew dealt with race very smartly, I thought.
RépondreSupprimerThe original was so brilliant, I'm afraid to look at this new one.. possibly the best television I've ever seen outside of the Simpsons, in the second season (and xmas specials) they add so much emotional range and poignancy alongside the comedy, straight genius to pull that off so well.
So I have never seen the BBC original (gasp) but it's on my list of things to do so I can't make any comparison. However, I do love Steve Carell (as I love all the daily showers). He's brilliant but Oscar Nunez who first caught my attention on Reno 911 (when the hell is that coming back?)might be a little fresher if we had more opportunities to see him in action. Anyway he appeared on the first episode and he is really a gifted comedic actor and would be perfect character to expand.
