What's the story behind, "No Homo." Can anyone date or explain its usage? More interestlingly can anyone who uses the term explain when, why and how the term became a part of their vocabulary? Are men that insecure about their own identity that they have to couch what they say with "no homo."
First heard it used by Cam'Ron in an interview he did with Hot 97 sometime last year. I was like "What the efff is this kid talking about." He then goes on to explain the usage. However, I'll admit that I'm not connected to the long tee set so it could have started much earlier.
RépondreSupprimerThe interview is probably still up on the Hot 97 site.
It's been around at least three years. Was originated (or at least popularized) by Cam and the Dip Set as far as I know. Used when something the speaker says can be interpreted as being gay or making the speaker sound gay even if that's not the intention.
RépondreSupprimerI guess you could construe its use as being homophobic but most folks who do use it (like myself and BdotC) are mocking the ridiculousness and inherent homophobia of it and playing it for laughs (I think). At least that's my intention. At the same time though, I acknowledge the puerileness of using it even fom that angle. I know it's not PC but it is funny to me (still) after all these years.
Interesting...I didn't know Cam and 'em originated but it would make sense given the precarious nature of his own sexuality. It's like I saw this clip of a film on masculinity that will be airing on PBS hopefully in the not to distant future and the filmmaker in question asked Busta Rhymes (who was with Mos, Talib and De La) about homophobia in hip hop after which Busta went damn near Jaheim on him. I mean Busta's a much more affable guy so he was jokey but with the same level of angst as Jaheim that fateful day on Hot 97.
